We came… we saw… we slept

 

They say an Englishman’s home is his castle – and for the team from CBS it proved to be true, even if the castle was only made of cardboard.

As a fundraising challenge to support the local homeless, Phil, Iain, Trudy, Matt and Caraline arrived at the Madejski Stadium to sleep rough for the night, armed with nothing more than a sleeping bag and some cardboard boxes – deftly transformed into ‘CBS Castle’, complete with flags to commemorate St George’s Day.

Mixing with other fundraisers throughout the evening, and with a live band playing to keep up morale, the team enjoyed a party atmosphere – but as night fell, the realities of sleeping rough became clear.

‘The street lights made it difficult to sleep,’ said Caraline from CBS. ‘I felt very vulnerable, and woke up with each small sound. The next day I could barely function even though I was back in my safe warm home. It really brought it home how difficult it is to function normally in such an environment’.

The CBS team had provided their own slogan, ‘Homeless doesn’t = Hopeless’ – and with a little help, many homeless people can get back to secure and productive lives.
